Humans of New York – the popular photoblog started by Brandon Stanton – is set to arrive as a new, episodic TV show on Facebook’s Watch platform.
Humans of New York – the popular photoblog created by Brandon Stanton which provides glimpses into the livelihoods of ordinary persons in New York and abroad – is heading to Facebook’s Watch platform as a new, 12-episode documentary.
Stanton began Humans of New York in 2010, and since then the journal has become somewhat of a darling on the Facebook platform – amassing some 17.5 million followers and 18.5 million likes. Beyond the confines of social media, Stanton has further released Humans of New York as a hard copy photojournal, and doubled up on that effort by releasing a sibling tome in the form of Humans of New York: Stories. The next avenue for the platform, then, is that of video; the project will now lead as a 12-part documentary featuring interviews from over 1,200 persons captured in over 4,00 days of filming. Stanton has offered that the footage used in the documentary series is comprised of over four years of work which – up until this point – has not been published.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Facebook has forked out the cash to carry the show on its new Watch platform; the social media company is reportedly paying between $10,000-$25,000 USD per episode to flight content on its newest service.
Humans of New York is expected to host its series premiere on Facebook Watch next week, though no formal date has yet been announced. Stanton’s efforts join companies such as Condé Nast Entertainment, NASA, and Quartz in developing original content for Watch.
