WhatsApp rockets past one billion daily active users

Facebook’s darling, WhatsApp, has officially surpassed one billion daily active users just a few months of surpassing one billion monthly active users.

‘You know what’s cooler than one million daily active WhatsApp users?’
Yes, that’s right – one billion daily active WhatsApp users. At least, that’s probably the conversation Facebook’s Mark Zuckerberg is having with himself today after the company’s darling acquisition announced its new milestone.

If the news sounds somewhat familiar, it’s because we announced earlier this year that WhatsApp was employed by some one billion monthly active users – meaning that the app has sharply risen in popularity in just a matter of months.
WhatsApp co-founder Jan Koum presided over the announcement, and offered a word of thanks to users, stating:

“Whether it’s sharing personalized photos and videos, connecting through video calling, or keeping friends updated throughout the day with Status, communicating on WhatsApp has never been easier or more personal. We are humbled that so many people are using these new features to connect with one another in their own special way. As we celebrate this milestone, we’re committed more than ever to bringing you more useful features to enjoy, while delivering the reliability, simplicity, and security you expect with WhatsApp. Thank you for your continued support.”

WhatsApp, of course, has benefitted from a slew of updates in recent months – as Kuom mentions, the app is now not only a go-to for sharing text messages, but further enables its users to share ‘Stories’ updates, share images with Snapchat-style image editing features, and even offers voice and video calling features.
It would seem likely that the app’s next major frontier will be monetization – it has previously been rumoured that the company is trialing not only a Business client, but further the use of bots to enable consumers to chat to brands directly on the platform.
whatsapp metrics
The company’s latest metrics reveal that one billion daily active users exchange 55 billion messages per day, in addition to 4.5 billion images and 1 billion videos per day. The app presently supports 60 languages, and is used by a sizeable 1.3 billion users every month.
