Snapchat has released a new update that allows its users to create custom geofilters to celebrate special occasions such as weddings or birthdays.
Snapchat is continuing its assault with new and improved mapping features, and fresh from the firm’s introduction of the global Snap Map comes the ability to create custom geofilters to celebrate special occasions.
Previously, geofilters have served as specific image filters that either rely on a user’s presence in a specific location (say, Cape Town, South Africa) or the occurrence of a special event (for example, Human Rights Day) to become available for use. While users have been able to create custom geofilters through image editing software or Snapchat’s own web tool, the app’s newest update places that ability in the hands of every user with a smartphone at their disposal.
The app’s “On-Demand Geofilter” suite allows users to enter into a mobile studio and comprise geofilters around themes (such as the occurrence of a birthday or wedding) that can be customised through the use of text, Bitmoji, and stickers.
Users can request to place a Geofilter in a specific location for a period as short as one hour up until 90 days; placing a geofilter costs $5.99 USD and requires the filter to go through an approval process that takes one business day.
The arrival of the feature is one of many small improvements that Snapchat has brought to its platform in recent weeks – a timely intervention considering that Instagram’s Stories feature officially has surpassed it by count of some 250 million daily active users.
