Facebook grows to reach a staggering 2 billion monthly active users

Facebook has reached 2 billion monthly active users thirteen years after its initial launch – growing its user base by 1 billion in less than five years.

Can we say it on Facebook’s behalf? ‘You know what’s cooler than one billion users?’
‘Two billion monthly active users’.
That’s right – Facebook has officially reached a new zenith today, some thirteen years after its initial launch; the social media giant now services over two billion monthly active users – for parity, that’s a growth of one billion additional users since 2012.

The news means that Facebook has cemented itself as the world’s largest social network by a significant stretch – surpassing YouTube’s 1.5 billion monthly active users, WeChat’s 889 million, Twitter’s 328 million, and Snapchat’s estimated 255 million.

The growth of the social network continues unhinged thanks to many of the company’s initiatives that serve to rally many of the previously unconnected regions of the globe; initiatives such as Free Basics and the company’s Aquila drone will likely propel the network toward reaching many more additional users in the months and years to come, notwithstanding the platform’s optimization for the ubiquity of Android smartphones and poor or intermittent connections.
The news marks Facebook’s second major victory for June; earlier this month, the company announced that Instagram Stories had climbed to service 250 million monthly active users; finally – and officially – surpassing that of Snapchat.
To celebrate the milestone, Facebook has given its users the option of sharing a new, custom video called Good Adds Up, which can be accessed here.
In a statement to TechCrunch, Facebook’s Chief Product Officer Chris Cox offered that “We’re getting to a size where it’s worth really taking a careful look at what are all the things that we can do to make social media the most positive force for good possible…” before adding a personal note – “I live with the constant goal of understanding, for every single thing that we do, how do we maximize all that goodness, and curtail any way that it can be misused or turned into something sad”.
As the saying goes – with great power comes great responsibility.
