Walleye, Muskie, Taimen: Is Google working on new Pixel phones?

A new report from the Android Open Source Project reveals that Google is working on three new Pixel smartphones codenamed Walleye, Muskie, and Taimen.

Google sure loves weird codenames; for example, the original Pixel duo that’s available on the market today were codenamed Marlin and Sailfish in development. Now it is reported that the Mountain View giant is developing three brand new phones – codenamed Walleye, Muskie, and Taimen – for release in 2017.
The new arrives courtesy of a report from the Android Open Source Project, which reveals that Google is developing three new handsets that will utilise Qualcomm’s new Snapdragon 835 chipset which is found on the Samsung Galaxy S8.

Google has previously asked for input from consumers as to what they’d like to see on a new Pixel device, and it is possible that the company could reveal its newest offerings at its annual I/O, which is expected to be held from May 17th to May 19th.
The rumoured production of three devices is a change of pace for Google – previously, the company concentrated its efforts on producing the standard Pixel as well as the larger Pixel XL.
It is expected that ‘Muskie’ is the codename pertaining to a standard size device, while ‘Walleye’ refers to an XL variant. It is presently unknown as to what ‘Taimen’ points to, though it is unlikely – given the fact that Google Assistant won’t be released on tablets – that the name points towards Google’s production of a slate.
While both Pixel devices have been well received by critics and consumers alike, the device remains locked to specific territories around the globe, and unfortunately never made its way to South Africa.
