The videos were created from information gleaned from TomTom’s location data and the publication of the brand’s Traffic Index 2017, which reveals which South African cities have been most affected by congestion.
Speaking to BusinessTech, Megan Bruwer, the project coordinator for the Stellenbosch Smart Mobility Laboratory, cited that improved infrastructure development is helping to improve Johannesburg’s ranking in TomTom’s Index.
Bruwer cited that “The Gauteng Freeway Improvement Project, Open Road Tolling and numerous ITS applications implemented along freeway corridors have also had a positive impact on traffic congestion – not to mention the establishment of the Gautrain.”

Johannesburg remains amongst the top 100 cities affected by congestion, coming in at a cool 70. Despite the fact that Johannesburg is South Africa’s most populous city, Cape Town took the title of the most congested city in the country, coming in at 48.
TomTom’s mapping data reveals the spread of morning and afternoon traffic and the staggering effect traffic congestion has on the travel of citizens into and out of South Africa’s most prominent cities.
