While Apple’s iPhone 8 could see a major design shakeup, the model might additionally introduce a new 3D camera with components made by LG.
Apple is widely expected to debut a radical design change with 2017’s iPhone that could incorporate the use of glass and a wraparound display, and now new rumours have posited that the device could see a major camera upgrade as well.
According to a report in the Korea Economic Daily, Apple is working alongside LG Innotek to develop a smartphone camera module that would enable 3D photography.

The report cites that LG Innotek’s 3D dual rear camera module could be used in Apple’s products from the first semester of 2017 onwards.
“œApple is now studying how to apply its 3D camera technology into LG Innotek‘s smartphone camera. Since LG Innotek also has its own 3D camera and related technologies, such joint efforts will likely to bear fruit sometime within next year”, the report cited.
The report cites that LG Innotek is already the exclusive supplier of dual cameras for the iPhone 7, which Apple unveiled in October this year.
An earlier report made by Ming-Chi Kuo of KGI Securities offered that Apple’s next iPhone might further include OIS (optical image stabilisation) on both the standard and Plus models, while another device in the range would employ a bezel-less OLED display and would support its own version of wireless charging.
A 3D camera system could help Apple make its own foray into augmented reality, which CEO Tim Cook expressed strong interest in after the success of Pokemon Go.
