GoPro has unveiled the pricing of its new line of cloud-connected HERO5 action cameras as well as its new pilotable Karma quadcopter drone.
By now, GoPro is likely the name that pops into your mind when you think of an action-camera, and for good reason. Now, not a company to rest on its laurels, the firm has announced a new range of cloud-connected HERO5 cameras as well as its long-awaited Karma drone.
Presiding over the launch in San Mateo, California, GoPro’s founder and CEO, Nicholas Woodman, introduced the company’s new product lineup under the banner of becoming an “end-to-end storytelling solution”.

“œWith these new products, we‘re delivering on our promise to make it easy to capture and share engaging stories… HERO5‘s ability to auto-upload photos and videos to a GoPro Plus account dramatically simplifies mobile, on-the-go editing, sharing and enjoyment. This is a game-changing experience that we will continue to build upon”, Woodman said.
GoPro’s goals are now more visible – and achievable – than ever. The company’s new cloud-based content creation service – GoPro Plus – will make it easier for users to access, edit and share footage captured through their action camera regardless of whether they access the platform through a smartphone or computer.
HERO5 Black
The HERO5 follows on from last year’s Hero4; the camera features a 2″ touch display, video resolution of up to 4K at 30fps, and images will be captured through a 12-megapixel sensor.
The device – which makes use of a single capture/stop button, and supports voice control – will automatically upload footage to the cloud once it begins charging.
Stereo audio recording makes a comeback, and the HERO5 Black will support GPS to boot.
The device will become available on October 2nd, and will retail for R7999 ZAR. The unit will further be compatible with existing mounts.
HERO5 Session
Following on from last year’s Hero4 Session, the HERO5 Session is the smaller companion to the flagship HERO5. Featuring the same video resolution quality (up to 4K at 30fps) the HERO5 Session chugs along with a 10-megapixel sensor.
While it might lack GPS, the device still includes a one button control, voice support, and will automatically upload captured footage to the web when charging.
The HERO5 Session will become available in November this year, and will retail in South Africa for approximately R5999 ZAR. Like the HERO5, the unit will be compatible with existing mounts.
Karma
GoPro’s drone has been a long-awaited affair, and the company’s California launch event finally gave us our first look at the device which will ferry the HERO5 and HERO5 Session into battle.
The Karma quad-copter will feature a compact design that can be folded into a backpack, and will arrive with an image stabilisation grip for silky smooth footage.
An integrated touch display will allow users to control the device from a connected phone or tablet, while the unit’s 3-axis stabilizer can be detached and fitted to the Karma grip for smooth handheld footage.
While pricing is yet to be confirmed, GoPro South Africa has confirmed that the Karma will be sold on its own, and in bundles with the HERO5 Black and HERO5 Session.
