Reports claim that Apple might go all-glass in next year’s iPhone and do something interesting with their display technology.
Two separate reports from the KGI researchers in March and April this year indicated that Apple might opt to return to glass casings in 2017 and yesterday new evidence emanating from Foxconn reinforces this idea. According to a Nikkei story published yesterday:
Foxconn Technology Group is developing a glass casing for smartphones as its key client Apple Inc. is said to be revamping the iPhone, people familiar with the developments say. Apple is expected to redesign the iPhone, including giving it a glass chassis, in 2017.
According to the source from Nikkei, Foxconn have been developing a glass chassis since last year. The report also claims that Apple might also be abandoning their LCD display technology and opting for OLED in the future. A poll ran by 9to5Mac last year indicated that customers are split (leaning to glass casing) 52% for glass and 48% against. The last all glass device Apple produced was the iPhone 4 and 4S which was one of their most popular model ranges. With the possibility of a curved screen next year, it may be that Apple will be able to abandon metal altogether.

With the expectation of only a small design update with this year’s iPhone 7, it could pave the way for Apple to shake things up with some major updates come 2017.
