Turns out WhatsApp has a secret emoji – here's how to find it

The latest version of WhatsApp quietly added a secret Olympics Emoji – here’s how to find it before everyone else does!

One of Twitter’s enduring (and endearing) features is its use of emoji to promote discussion around events – and now it would seem thanks to the discovery of a special Olympics emoji that WhatsApp is about to do the same.
The app’s latest update – version 2.16.7 – served users a battery of new features, including the ability to zoom when recording videos in the app as well as the capability to send big emoji.

Now – perhaps to promote the latter feature – a special Olympics emoji has been found within the app and will likely become public ahead of the commencement of the 2016 Olympic Games on Friday, the 5th of August.
If you own an Android device and have updated WhatsApp to its latest version, you’ll find the emoji within the app’s emoji repository underneath the soccer/sport pane. You’ll be able to use it, though only users with the latest version of the app will be able to see it.
However, if you own an iPhone, the method to unlock the special Olympic emoji proceeds as follows:

  • Open WhatsApp web by heading to web.whatsapp.com
  • Open a chat, and paste◯◯◯◯◯ and send the message.
  • The symbols will transform into the special Olympics emoji; the iconic five interlocking rings that symbolize the event.

If the emoji doesn’t work at first, try log out of all WhatsApp web presences and try again.
The addition of the special Olympics emoji might herald the inclusion of other time or event-sensitive emoji at later stages.
The news comes while we await the inclusion of several rumoured new features into the app; namely video calling, music sharing, and Snapchat-style image editing features.
