Sony has announced a follow-up to last year’s E4 with the release of the Xperia E5, which brings modest specifications at a low price point.
We had hands-on time with Sony’s Xperia E4 devices last year at the company’s Johannesburg launch, and found them to be one of the most interestingly positioned devices in the company’s low-end range. Now, the Japanese firm has unveiled its follow up in the form of the Xperia E5.
The Xperia E5 brings with it a MediaTek quad-core procesor, a 13 megapixel primary and 5 megapixel secondary shooter, and a 5″ 720p display that’s complemented by 1.5GB of RAM, 16GB of internal storage (expandable to 200GB via MicroSD), and a 2,700mAh battery. Further, dual-SIM support rounds out the package.

While Sony have yet to announce pricing, the E5 is likely to follow in it’s precessor’s footsteps in retailing in and around the R2000 ZAR mark.
One of the hallmarks of the E4 range was its long battery life – including an emergency mode that could see the device last beyond a week. The Xperia E5’s battery similarly is expected to last upwards of two days in regular use.
The Xperia E5 is further tipped to include Sony’s Smart Celeaner feature, which will remove unused Android processes and cache data to deliver a fluid and supposedly lag-free user experience.
Speaking at the device’s launch, Tsutomu Sato, Sony’s Director of Prdouct Marketing, stated that the “Xperia E5 is a no-compromise approach to smartphone capability at this section of the market… It’s the perfect device for those seeking affordable access to the performance, camera technology and design more often associated with high-end mobile devices.”

The Xperia E5 is expected to debut in Europe, Latin America, as well as Middle Eastern and African territories, and will likely arrive in South Africa given the E4’s presence on our shores.
