UberHEALTH is set to launch for a limited time in Johannesburg, Cape Town, Durban and other major cities today, and will offer on-demand flu shots.
If you’re feeling the flu during South Africa’s change of seasons, then you’re in luck: UberHEALTH, a new promotion from the disruptive firm, will be offering on-demand flu shots from 10am-3pm today (UTC+2) on April 22nd.
The launch of UberHEALTH in South Africa was proceeded by a trial in the United States, where the service experimented with on-demand vaccinations.

Customers in the US were able to request ‘wellness packs’ in 35 different cities.
Now, customers in Johannesburg, Pretoria, Durban, Cape Town, and Port Elizabeth will be able to request flu shots from the service as part of a special promotion.
The venture forms a new partnership between Uber South Africa and Discovery; Discovery Vitality members will earn 1,000 Vitality points following their flu vaccination, and DiscoveryCard holders, who add their DiscoveryCard to their Uber account, will have the R100 home visit fee refunded.
At 2015’s AfricaCom conference, Uber South Africa’s General Manager, Alon Lits, presented a keynote address, covering the launch of Uber in South Africa and the potential of apps and services to fundamentally change the way in which society operates.
Citing the success of Uber in South Africa ““ which has seen more than 1 million trips made in the past year alone ““ Lits offered insight into different avenues the service was set to embark upon, including UberEats and the Uber Pool initiative to introduce ride-sharing as a means to address traffic congestion in cities such as Johannesburg and Cape Town.
UberHEALTH forms part of a wider strategy for the company. In the United States, Dr John Brownstein, who was recently hired by the firm – and also serves as the chief innovation officer at Boston‘s Children‘s Hospital – stated that “there are many examples where a mobile platform could enhance healthcare delivery ranging from urgent care visits, medical transport, drug delivery, disease screening, and home care visits.“
