The Tesla Model 3 is set to be unveiled on March 31st. This will be the make or break car Elon Musk’s Tesla company as they try to bring EV cars to the masses.
Exciting times ahead! Late yesterday Tesla sent out invitations to the media for its expected March 31st event at its Hawthorne, California facility where it will unveil the Model 3, the company’s first mass-market vehicle. A lot of speculation has been floating around about just how much of the actual car will be displayed (as it only enters production next year), but a tweet from Tesla indicates that we might see the whole thing!
The long anticipated Model 3 will be the make-or-break version for Tesla. The company has in the past focussed on expensive models (the Model S and Model X selling only in the tens of thousands) to enable research and development of critical components. To gain critical mass Tesla needs to up their sales by quite some margin – seeing that major vehicle manufacturers sells millions of vehicles each year.

The Model 3 will rely on the so-called Gigafactory to meet its battery needs, a massive facility under construction in the Nevada desert that Tesla says will reach peak manufacturing capacity in 2020. The Model 3 will cost in the vicinity of $35,000 USD before tax breaks, which puts it right in the middle of their competitor range (Chevrolet’s Bolt will cost $30,000 after tax breaks). The Model 3 is understood to offer 200-plus miles of range on a charge, far more practical than the sub-100-mile cars that have dominated the affordable EV market thus far.
