It almost feels like CPU power doubles every couple of years. Technology has advanced at a rapid pace in the smartphone market and everyone wants to provide the latest and greatest chips to get a slice of the lucrative mobile industry. After the recent disappointment of the Snapdragon 810 processor, Qualcomm is reportedly working on a brand spanking new 10-core processor; more specifically, the Snapdragon 818 which has a few tricks up its sleeve…
The new Qualcomm Snapdragon 818 processor will be the first 10 core processor, where the SoC will sport two high-power CPU cores, two mid-power CPU cores, and four low-power CPU cores as well.
The high-power cores are based on the Cortex-A72, with a clock speed of 2.0 GHz. Then the mid-power cores will be based on the Cortex-A53, with clock speeds around 1.6 GHz. There isn’t any information available around the low-end processors yet, most agree that the lower end cores will clock in at 1.2GHz. What is known is that the new chip will be based on Qualcomm’s 20nm architecture.
The Snapdragon 818 will come closer to desktop processor capabilities, but actual benchmark tests will have to confirm that rumor. Although the speculation is recent, it is hard to estimate the exact arrival of the 818 chip. We do know that other competitors like MediaTek are also working on 10-core chips, so that should speed up the arrival of the highly anticipated processors.
