CES 2015 is all about the latest and greatest gadgets. Sometimes we forget to look past the big players (smartphones, laptops, smartwatches etc.) and miss some of the most innovative products on show at the event. The past couple of years we have seen a big interest in tracking health. Whether it is normal smartphone health trackers or specific wearable tech measuring everything from activity and calorie burn to heart rate and GPS stats. Now you can also do the same whilst riding your bike with the new Connected Cycle smart pedal.
The Connected Cycle is a smart bike pedal equipped with GPS and GPRS sensors that are powered by cycling. As soon as your pedals move, the sensors track your activity so it acts as a basic fitness tracker, recording the speed, route, incline, and calories burned of every ride. That data is stored in a connected app that lets you view this activity over time. All the data is stored on the pedals themselves, you won’t need to bring your smartphone with you to track this activity.
Since your bike is equipped with location tracking, it is easy for you (or rather the police) to recover your stolen bike. The Connected Cycle comes out with enabled cellular service. The product is nearing the end of its development phase but there still isn’t any pricing available as of yet. The Connected Cycle’s manufacturer claims that the pedal will be compatible with almost any type of bike and it can only be removed with a special key held by the owner.
Quite an interesting concept and should make the life of bike owners in SA a lot easier!
