The LG G Flex was one of the more interesting devices in 2014. While it was certainly flawed in many ways, it did give us something new to consider in a smartphone market that seems to be getting more humdrum every year as innovation dries up.
Now, LG have announced its successor, the aptly named G Flex 2. It is a truly striking device to behold, unlike anything else on the market. While the G Flex wasn‘t a particularly good looking device, the G Flex 2 has been designed to resemble the LG G3 and it has certainly worked in the looks department.
The device will come in some nice colours as well, with platinum silver and white resembling that of the G3, but also with an additional vivid red.
One of our complaints about the original was its mammoth size, which LG has now whittled down slightly to a much more manageable size, again akin to that of the G3. It has a 5.5 inch flexible display, coming in at 1080p Full HD, as opposed to the 720p panel we saw on the G Flex.
The camera also seems much improved, with the Laser Focus and OIS+ image stabilisation also launched with the G3. It has the latest Snapdragon 64-bit Octa-core chipset and will launch with Android 5.0 Lollipop.
According to LG, the device is also more durable than we saw on last year‘s device. The self-healing back has a new formula that allows scratches to be fixed faster than before. When we reviewed the G Flex we did find that only very small and shallow scratches would heal, so hopefully the new plastic does a better job.
Not only will it heal faster, but LG took regular Corning Glass and burned it via chemical reaction to make it 20 percent more durable.
We didn‘t receive any details about the size of the battery during the press conference, but LG claims that it will last just as long as the previous version and charge twice as quickly. We will bring you more details once they come through.
The LG G Flex was mostly a prototype product in our eyes, which was meant to gauge the reaction of the public in seeing something new and different. Maybe the G Flex 2 will now completely blow our socks off, as the LG G3 did.
