Good news, kids (and parents) – Disney has announced that they will be launching an all new movie streaming app, that brings the marvels of Disney straight to your smartphone.
Come next week Tuesday, Disney will launch Disney Movies Anywhere (DMA). The cloud-based service will allow its users to watch Disney movies anytime, anywhere either from their smartphone or tablet.
Unfortunately for Android Disney fans, this app will only be available for iOS. The app integrates with the users iTunes account as well as a valid Disney account.
Disney movies have been available on iTunes for a while, so this app will allow users to watch Disney movies that they have already purchased. They can also use the app to buy new movies and stream them straight to their mobile device.
In addition to bringing an array of delightful Disney movies to your smartphone, users will also be able to stream both Pixar and Marvel movies. More than 400 movies are available on the DMA App, thus making the DMA app useful for both kids and their parents.
The app features a filtering system, too. So parents who are concerned about their toddlers watching something a bit more “˜adult‘ can filter the films by their MPAA (Motion Picture Association of America) ratings.
While users will be able to watch big Disney hits such as Toy Story, The Princess and the Frog and even Iron Man 3, the DMA app will give them access to disney classics such as Snow White, Cinderella and more. These classics are not available for purchase as they are locked away in the Disney Vault.
The launch of the DMA app is a big step for Disney in terms of streaming media. The company hasn‘t ventured too far into the world of streaming, but with the launch of DMA, the company can firmly enter this arena.
Disney has previously experimented with online streaming services, however, that plug was pulled rather quickly.
In 2009, Disney launched Disney Movies Online; an online movie service that let users buy and rent movies from the Disney library. Sadly, this service was closed down in December of 2012.
The company also has a multi-year content deal with Netflix, which allows them to offer brand new films from the Disney, but the DMA app is Disney‘s own baby.
This is a very smart move for Disney, who are one of the biggest film production companies in Hollywood.
As per usual, the DMA app will not (yet) be available to South African iTunes customers, but we are hoping that it will be made available soon – who wouldn‘t want to watch a Disney classic on their smartphone.
