Silicon Valley – a magical place that the world‘s largest tech companies call home and where new tech startups pop up more frequently than McDonald‘s branches.
The splendour of Silicon Valley has intrigued people over many years, so, naturally, someone saw the golden opportunity to create a television series about it. And no, not a drama, but a clever, witty comedy.
This is HBO‘s latest offering – an 8 episode comedy, focused on startup culture in California, aptly called “˜Silicon Valley‘.
The series follows protagonist Richard, a highly intelligent yet socially awkward computer programmer that works for a tech startup in Silicon Valley. Richard also lives in a so-called “˜Hacker House‘ – a startup incubator that houses a number of super clever, super awkward technology geeks.
Here, in the “˜Hacker House‘, Richard is constantly surrounded by brilliant (if not a little crazy) computer programmers.
However, Richard‘s work is special and very very clever. It‘s not long before word get‘s out that Richard‘s work is amazing, obviously making him a huge talent asset to any company.
Queue the action. It‘s not long before a billionaire investor wants to invest in Richard, while his current company also bids to keep him. However, Richard and his friends in the “˜Hacker House‘ decide to start their own company in the hopes of becoming a Zuckerberg, Spiegel or Jobs.
The series, which is scheduled to premier on HBO in the US on April 6th, looks clever, interesting and, of course, really funny. A winning formula for any “˜startup‘ series.
It is also about time that someone brings the wonder of Silicon Valley to the small screen. Sure, there will always be films, but an ongoing series will give us tech junkies a little taste of what it‘s like in the Mecca of tech. And if we can laugh a little too, all the better.
Any place that is home to Apple, Google, Facebook and Yahoo creates the perfect backdrop for entertainment, and we can‘t wait to watch.
Unfortunately, there is no word yet if or when us South Africans will be able to watch “˜Silicon Valley‘, but we‘re hoping it‘s soon.
“˜Silicon Valley‘ was created by Mike Judge – famed for his cult movie hit, “˜Office Space‘ and stars Thomas Middleditch, T.J Miller, Zach Woods and Kumail Nanjiani.
