When it comes to wearable tech, we don‘t really think of it as being “˜fashion forward‘. Smart watches and other devices aren‘t always the prettiest. And while Google Glass has graced the runway at a Dianne Von Furstenburg fashion show at New York Fashion Week, it doesn‘t make wearable tech anymore attractive. Up until now that is.
Cuff is a line of jewelry and accessories with a twist. While it‘s beautifully designed and fashionable, it‘s also wearable tech.
These Cuff accessories are equipped with a small, wireless device called a CuffLinc that sends a Bluetooth signal to your smartphone.
The main idea behind Cuff, is to alert your friends or family when you are in trouble. The small device inserted into these accessories has an accelerometer and is also waterproof – making it super secure when worn as jewelry.
Cuff works in conjunction with an app. The wearer can program the device (or CuffLinc) by means of the app, to send alerts to certain people, should they be in trouble.
The device can either alert family, friends or even the authorities if something is wrong. And all of this is done by simply pressing the device.
What makes Cuff so user friendly, is the fact that it doesn‘t have to be recharged. The device is able to last for around 12 months, whereafter you would need to replace the CuffLinc with a new one.
Cuff was officially launched yesterday, and the company introduced a line of 9 accessories which include bracelets, necklaces and keychains for men.
The company has also said that they want to give other jewelry designers the opportunity to license the technology, which they can then incorporate into their own designs – thus helping the Cuff idea expand it‘s horizons.
Cuff is currently busy with it‘s pre-order campaign which should last for about 2 months, after which the iOS app will be released. For now, the Cuff app will only be available to iOS users.
It is expected that the first pieces of jewelry will start shipping to US customers in September.
It’s great to see that wearable tech is finally taking steps to become more fashionable. In the end, every person wants to enjoy the benefits of wearable tech without looking stupid.
