Last year Google announced a unified privacy policy, which would encompass almost all of its products. As soon as that happened, six European countries started investigating Google over privacy concerns. Spain is the first country to bring consequences to the search giant, though.
Spain fined Google a total of €900,000 for allegedly violating data protection laws through its current approach. The firm isn’t properly explaining why it’s collecting personal information, the Spanish Data Protection Agency claims; it also isn’t saying how long it will keep that content, and it isn’t giving Spaniards enough control over who sees what.
Google are reportedly preparing a full report and doing it as fast as possible before other countries also dish out a fine or penalty of some sort. In all likelihood Google will have to at least change some policies in Europe or explain their function in more detail.
