Update: Over the weekend the speculation came to an end, and Apple have confirmed the buyout. The iPhone maker has confirmed the deal, issuing its familiar statement that it buys smaller companies “from time to time.”
Apple is trying to build upon its strong product range in a couple of different ways these last couple of years. One strategy is buying companies that could help with certain parts of its development cycle. This is undoubtedly the case here. According to sources, they are mere days away from closing a deal to acquire PrimeSense. Cupertino is acquiring the motion sensing technology firm for $345 million.
It could hint at future Apple products with natural, motion controlled interfaces, integrating the same kind of technology that PrimeSense used to help Microsoft build the first Kinect. According to a report, Apple is hounding after the motion sensing tech to improve Apple TV. PrimeSense sells its own 3D sensors and middleware for use in markets as diverse as TV, mobile, computers, retail, robotics, industry and healthcare.
We are truly interested to see how Apple includes this technology in its products, as there certainly seems to be many areas where it can be applied.
