London to get its own .london domain name

The UK‘s capital will oon have a more personalized digital presence as they plan on rolling out a .london internet domain name early next year.
London‘s new domain name forms part of ongoing efforts to build a bigger online presence for the capital and promote the city in itself.
However, it is not only London that will have an exclusive domain name as of next year. Big cities such as Berlin, Vienna, Brussels and New York will all get their own domain name in 2014. ICANN, the world body organization that gave these cities the go-ahead for their personalized domain names, said that there are currently only 22 generic top-level domain such as .com.
Also, popular country domains such as .uk or .za are considered the norm. A .london or .berlin domain name will bring a much more specific audience to the various city‘s websites.
London‘s Mayor, Boris Johnson said that the .london domain name would enable different companies to associate better with London‘s international brand:
“œThis is also an excellent opportunity to expand London‘s digital presence, which in turn is set to generate funds to invest back into the city,“ he said.
the ICANN also said that they have received many requests for specific domain names, some of which were a little bit broad – there were requests for a .music domain and even a .tree domain. A little strange, I suppose.
ICANN also believes that personalized and more specific domain names will really skyrocket in the coming year, with more than 1000 new generic doamin names to be approved.
On a greater scale, entire continents are also getting their own domain names like the .africa domain name.
What would you think of a .cpt or .jozi domain name? A cool idea or waste of time?
