The latest installment of the video game Call of Duty has broken the $1 billion mark and become the fastest selling entertainment product of all time.
Sales of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, the eighth title in the franchise, hit the mark after just 16 days since its release in early November. The game broke the record previously set by James Cameron’s 3D film Avatar, released in 2009.
Eric Hirshberg, chief executive of Activision Publishing, the company which produces the games, said, “Call of Duty has become that rare entertainment franchise that transcends its own genre and every year new people are drawn in.”
According to Activision, the war game now has more than 30 million players with 6 million having registered online to play with or against one another.
